Hi All!
So I guess I now have gone from being the only Okinawa-Te black belt in Utah, to being the only one in Kansas, unless there are others I don't know about (I'd love it if there were).
I got a new job in Wichita and we moved right after Christmas and closed on our new house in New Year's eve.
I got a house that has a basement that will do alright for a micro-dojo. I just need to install the heavy bag hook into the basement ceiling.
Happy New year to everyone from Kansas,
Dave

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 11:42 AMHi Dave....and happy new year.
congrats on the new job....and the new house with suitable space.
I know what you mean about 'the old training by yourself trick'....takes abit of discipline/ motivation.
what sort of 'routine' do you work to ??...

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 12:25 PMExcellent question, Guy.
I wish I had a good answer to go with it. Right now I'm still trying to figure with the new job and new schedules kids getting to school when to get my workouts in on a consistent basis.
When I do workout, I tend to vary things. In my last workout I did warm-ups and then 5 block/2punches, push-ups, a 40 rep triple kick set, and then went over all my waza and grabs (not much fun by yourself). I finished off with a run through sword and hammer and that was all I had time for.
I try to mix things up on working different things. Sometimes more on kata, other times more single basic technique, other times bag work or sparring combinations. My weapons kata have been getting really rusty, since any bo or spear kata have to be really modified or moved outside to practice.
Once I get the bag hook installed I am going to start looking seriously for some other training partner. If there is no obligation, it is all too easy to just let thing slip.

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 12:49 PMHaving been doing a majority of training on my own...motivation and discipline seem to be the bigest hurdles. Of late...i have done a circuit kind of session...set of side kicks......a kata...set of front kicks...kata....pushups...kata...etc...that sort of thing...then roll thru it 5 xs....
Good luck finding a training partner...as you know, that will help with motivation more than anything. When you find a training partner, your chances of finding others doubles.
Best of luck settling in the family...and with the new job, in the new town...dare say the OT training is taking a bit of a back seat, and rightly so...
regards

Fri, February 1, 2008 - 7:27 PMDave now that you have settled in a bit have you seen any Flying Monkeys? -

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 8:03 PMI have to say, as a small child, flying monkeys was one of my great concerns. The other one, of course, was whether being under my elementary school desk was actually going to protect me in the event of a nuclear attack. -

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Sat, February 9, 2008 - 8:12 PMMark,
No flying monkeys, yet. The weather here is strangely variable. For example, today we had a high of nearly 70, tomorrow the high is supposed to be 35, and the wind does blow, but after growing up in Simi, its actually kind of comforting.
I am well on the way to getting my basement dojo set up. Last week I installed my heavy bag hook. Today I ordered two 4'X7' sheet mirrors to mount on the one wall. Once they are up, it will look like a nice little place for training. Now I just have to stay motivated enough to get up at 5:15am to actually do the training. It was nice early this week to be able to hang and whack on my bag.

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:53 AMIt wouldn't suprize me if Dave was not only the only OT black belt in Kansas, but actually the only OT student / practicioner in Kansas. Good luck in your new place Dave. I haven't been online for monthes myself. My computer died and I decided not to invest in a new one. Instead, I'm going to go without until I move to Arizona to be with my wife and her computer (July at the earliest, October at the latest). But for now I've found one I can borrow, so once again, I'll be putting in my two cents here on the Tribe -

Re: Toto, I think we're in Kansas
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 4:03 PMWell, I can say that I am not the only Okinawa-Te practitioner in Kansas. I've got a little class in my basement dojo with five students, two of them my own boys. I'm really happy with the way my basement dojo has turned out and it feels as nice as some other "real" dojos I've trained in over the years.
It is tricky trying to run classes, mind the family, and keep down a good (though time consuming) job. I also have my church responsibilities together with doing some work in scouting. It pretty much means I don't have any spare time in my schedule and I hardly ever watch the cable with unlimited channels that comes with my job. The one cool thing is that I can get UFC pay-per-view for half off. My wife is a die-hard UFC fan and we DVR all the stuff so that I can watch it in my few spare moments.
I keep trying to see some of the local tournaments, but other than 45 minutes of one, I never manage to have the time in my schedule to attend, let alone participate. I did find a fairly open-minded guy with a school near my home who was game to let me come in and try a bit of sparring. Now I just have to find the time to do it!
